Where You Will Work

Located approximately 50 miles northeast of Safford, Arizona on U.S. Highway 191, Morenci operations (an open-pit copper mining complex) has been in continuous operation since 1939. The operation consists of two concentrators, crushed-ore leach pad and stacking system, a low-grade run-of-mine (ROM) leaching system; four SX plants; and three EW tank houses that produce copper cathode.

Description

Safely performs duties related to the blasting and excavation of natural materials at a skilled level.

  • May operate stemming equipment such as: backhoes, front-end loaders, skid-steer loaders, stemming trucks, and light-duty vehicles

  • May perform or be responsible for the following duties:

  • Programming blast patterns using electronic blasting system

  • Reviewing blast timing and sequence in accordance with tying in pattern

  • Measuring blast holes for total depth and water depth

  • Determining powder load and stem height

  • Proper priming of blast holes and depths

  • Assembling primer and placing primer with main charge in blast hole

  • Controlling inventory explosives

  • Communicate and interact with various departments and employees within various levels of organization

  • Responsible for the knowledge and safe performance of the following procedures: clearing blast sites, securing and holding blocking positions, blast initiation, post-blast inspection, misfires, mining out problem holes, dewatering blast holes, and lightning prediction

  • May assist with proper hook-up and delay techniques of non-electric, electric, and/or electronic initiation systems in accordance with blast design and engineering criteria

  • Perform pre-shift and work area inspections

  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Six (6) months of mine operations experience

  • Basic computer skills

  • Must obtain permission to legally handle explosives per ATF standards once in position

  • Knowledge of hazards associated with all blast patterns, including securing blast areas from public access and equipment

  • Must have completed academic and practical competencies required (this includes Line of Progression requirements for internal employees where LOP Exists) and have experience demonstrating the required aptitude. The selected candidate shall demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge and skills while also passing a written assessment where required. This exam is based on skills/abilities and/or academic knowledge; as well as safety.

Preferred

  • High School diploma or GED

  • Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures given in English

  • Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards

  • Must be able to work in a potentially stressful environment

  • This is a safety sensitive role

  • Personal protective equipment is required on a regular basis, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and, as needed: respirator, rubber steel-toed boots, gloves, fall protection, protective clothing, goggles, face shield and other protective equipment as required

  • Employee may be required to work in environments that may include exposure to extreme temperatures, humidity, dust, noise, fumes, and gasses

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on uneven work surfaces and work on elevated platforms

  • Frequently may be required to lift up to fifty (50) pounds during the course of the work day

  • May be required to work a non-standard schedule which may include shift work (other than day shift) in a 24/7/365 operation

The estimated pay range for this role is currently  $22.50 - $30.00/hour. This range reflects base salary only and does not include bonus payments, benefits or retirement contributions. Actual base pay is determined by experience, qualifications, skills and other job-related factors.
